Mad About Paris, Much more than a guide
Paris in the morning is beautiful
Paris in the afternoon is charming
Paris in the evening is enchanting
But Paris after mindninght is…
And I loved it! Oh, don’t worry, I didn’t fall in love with Owen Wilson, I don’t want to marry him! I had my heart broken once, it’s enough. No, with this ultimate opus, Woody makes a declaration of love to Paris, but he also makes a declaration of love… to love.
Love is THE thing, he says. In art and in life. Forget the money, forget the mind, forget the « experts », the conventions. Art has to be familiar. It is not a question of intellect but a question of heart. We need to go into art as we fall in love, and that’s what is eternal and universal.
So, of course : Paris! The city of Art, the city of Love.
« Is there a symphony, a painting, a book in the world which can be compared with Paris as a work of art ? » Asks Woody, speeking with the voice of his caracter, Gil.
Because the universe is empty and terrifying. Because we are all afraid of death.
But, in Paris, people dance, drink, love! In Paris, the beauty is everywere. And that’s an answer to the mystery of our existence.
That’s why we are all Mad About Paris !
And to personify the beauty of this city, of course, Woody chose Marion Cotillard whose adorable face in this film is enchanting. It was impossible for me to interview her (imagine, she wasn’t even at Cannes! She actually gave birth to her first son Marcel Canet last Thursday, just a few days before the Palmes d’Or was delivered). But I had an idea. So, here is, exclusively for you, my imaginary interview with: Paris !
This is not the first time you play in a Woody Allen Film, do you like working with him?
Paris : I love him! He’s a great director. And what’s even more important, he loves cities. As much as women. Of course, he prefers New York, but I think I’m the second in his heart.
He has shown Paris before, he filmed you in “Everyone says I love you”. What was different this time ?
Paris : First of all, in Midnight in Paris, I play the leading part ! But I would say that above all, in Every One says I love you, he asked me to play a role, to pretend to be Paris, like a « carte postale », you know ? For Midnight in Paris, he wanted me to be myself.
Is it possible for an actress to « be herself » ?
Paris (laughing): Excellent question ! Yes ! And no… But I mean he took me as I am. He wanted to find a certain truth, to show all of me, even the old lady I am.
Did he succeed ?
Paris: Of course he did!
And how, according to you ?
Paris: (Wispering in my ear): The light. He succeeded in capturing the light. That’s the secret.Anouk, life from Pont St. Louis, Anouk, for Mad About Paris.
