My Concierge Told Me
Paris grape harvest started
It was a sunny, delicious day in Paris, perfect weather for the grape harvest which started today in Montmartre. A grape harvest in Montmartre you might wonder? Yes, the small vineyard on the hill is one of the unexpected miracles of Paris.
Do you remember Amélie? Of course you do. Well, Montmartre has retained the village-like atmosphere you’ve seen in the film. And the small vineyard of 1500 square metres is definitely part of it. It’s fun, it’s picturesque, but don’t expect anything like a Pommard or a Margaux from the grapes of Montmartre. You would have heard about it if it were good.
The mayor and the wine
And don’t imagine that a winegrower does the work. The horticulturists of the city, who usually take care of the gardens and parks, do the harvest. The Clos de Montmartre is, of course, a tiny vineyard. It doesn’t take them more than a couple of hours to pick around 1000 kg of grapes which than will be pressed, guess where? In the cellar of the Mairie, the town hall of the 18th arrondissement. This must be France!
It’s not cuvée Coppola
The wine has the reputation of being a bit tart. But who cares? It’s all about the fun and the Fête des vendanges (the wine harvest party), which is always the first weekend of October. From 5th to 9th of October you can party together with villagers of Montmartre. They open the bottles from the previous year, and, gosh, you might need some aspirin the next day.
